Spelljammer
Shadow of the Spider Moon

Spelljammer is a hidden gem of D&D lore - a recognizable, beloved setting to older hobbyists, but almost entirely unknown by the newer generations of players and DMs. The sense of adventure, the aesthetics, the variety! In bits and pieces it's beginning to show back up in official lore - in Baldur's Gate 3, little easter eggs in the Dungeon of the Mad Mage or Rime of the Ice Maiden - and I'm excited for its return to the canon of 5th Edition.

Many years ago (2009 or 2010) I was able to share my love of the Spelljammer campaign setting with college friends and the young sibling of a college friend, and I returned to it again in 2015. Between these two campaigns 5th Edition had been released, but there were no rules for many of Spelljammer's iconic features. Over the course of a few weeks I 'peeled apart' the 3rd Edition rules presented in Dragon magazine's Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon, and updated those rules to 5th Edition - creating the monsters, items, and ship rules that the newer edition lacked. To put a bit of color on it I used the original art assets from the Dragon publication and re-assembled it into a tight 46-page PDF to print and share with my table. For a year, more or less, they dodged asteroids and crossed blades with space vampires in one of the most enjoyable campaigns I've ever run.
